One day, I had a homestay at a Uganda family. The family was supported by FHI(Food for the Hungry International) because of their poverty. Especially, the 4th daughter, Alice was registered for CDP(Child Development Program:)Even though they were not affluent enough to invite guest, they offered me great favor.
When I arrived at their home at 6 o’clock, the day already got dark. Because there was no electricity in and around the home, the only thing that I could depend on was a flash light. The first impression that I entered the house was shocking. The house was consisted of mud wall, soil floor and straw roof. While I was sleeping, I could hear the bugs crawling in the straw. The floor was as same as outside ground. It was completely empty place. I could not see anything in the house such as bed, table, chairs and windows.
After sleeping over night in that home, I woke up with sunshine and the cock’s call. At the outside of the house, 3 women were preparing for breakfast. They were roasting the peanuts and squeezing milk from goat. The father was making seat for me. He brought a chair and a table which were the only chair and table in the house. At that time, the family’s first son came back from market with a loaf of bread.
Finally, the breakfast was ready. I set down at the chair behind the table which had the roasted peanuts, sponge tasted bread and milk in the sandy cup. I, however, hesitated to eat the food. It was not because of the bread tasted like sponge, but because of the family’s touching impression in their eyes. The family looked at me just standing apart without eating. The reason was that they do not eat breakfast due to lack of food. I was impressed by their geniality and devotion.
By sharing the food with the family, I stared to meditate about my life. I wanted to earn a lot of money to pack me with opulence. I pursed luxurious life style for me: constructing villa, buying everything I want and spending money as much as I need. Through the experience I had in Uganda, I reconsidered myself. Even though the Uganda family was not abundant as me, they shared the most precious thing to strange person. Amazed by their devotion, I concluded to devote myself for others. I realize that charitable work is necessary and affluent people should help the others who are not bountiful. Also, I want to live by helping others and doing the charity.
